Image editing is increasingly used by advertisers and influencers to make people and products more attractive. The accessibility of editing software encourages its use, particularly on social media. At the same time, image manipulation contributes to unrealistic beauty ideals and health problems, such as eating disorders and depression. These concerns have prompted some countries to consider or introduce policies to regulate image editing. Depending on the form of disclosure used, such regulations can affect both consumers and brands. For their upcoming SWOCC publication, Alexander Pfeuffer and Dasha Kolesnyk examine the impact of image manipulation disclosures in sponsored social media content. In this online lunch session on the 11th of February they disclose the first results of their research.

As a designer at RAUWcc, Victor van Gaasbeek brings several years of experience working with AI, starting with open-source tools like Stable Diffusion and now exploring tools such as Nano Banana, Midjourney and Weavy. At RAUWcc, he works on a wide range of creative projects, from campaigns to brand identities, integrating AI in various ways throughout the creative process.

Drawing on this experience, he explores an increasingly relevant question: Where, in practice, do we draw the line between a helpful AI edit and a campaign generated entirely by AI? And what does this mean for a brand’s authenticity?

”In an era where almost anything can be generated to perfection, genuine human connection becomes the most valuable asset.”
